Description
Beneath the skull base, the pharyngobasilar fascia spans as a thick fibrous membrane forming the nonmuscular superior wall of the pharynx. From an inferior perspective, its attachment to the pharyngeal tubercle of the basilar part of the occipital bone sits in the midline, while lateral fibers blend with the petrotympanic region and cartilaginous margin of the auditory tube. The sheet bridges between the bony cranial base superiorly and the pharyngeal constrictor layer inferiorly, where it reinforces the pharyngeal wall at the level where skeletal support is otherwise minimal. A tough roof. This angle matters because the pharyngobasilar fascia anchors the nasopharynx and provides a stable substrate for the levator and tensor veli palatini as they act on the soft palate and pharyngotympanic (auditory) tube. Surgeons working in the nasopharynx, for example during transnasal endoscopic repair of cerebrospinal fluid leaks at the clivus or resection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with parapharyngeal extension, rely on the fascial plane at the skull base to distinguish mucosa and muscular wall from the osseous limits above. It also clarifies why infections in the pharyngeal mucosa can track along adjacent fascial spaces while the pharyngobasilar fascia itself remains a stout barrier at the roof of the pharynx. For teaching, the plate suits head and neck anatomy labs, otolaryngology lecture decks, and skull base surgery atlases that need a clean depiction of the pharyngeal aponeurosis and its bony attachments in a male specimen.
