Description
Anteriorly oriented, the pyloric part of the stomach is presented as the distal segment of the gaster (ventriculus) between the gastric body and the proximal duodenum, with the pyloric antrum widening superior and leftward before narrowing into the pyloric canal. The lesser curvature tracks along the superomedial border toward the pylorus, while the greater curvature forms the inferolateral contour of the gastric wall. Distally, the canal tapers toward the pyloric orifice, where the thickened circular muscle of the pyloric sphincter lies at the gastroduodenal junction. Spatially, this region sits inferior to the left lobe of the liver and anterior to the pancreas, with the first part of the duodenum continuing to the patient’s right. Clear separation of antrum and canal matters in practice because disease and intervention tend to cluster here. Peptic ulceration often involves the pre-pyloric region or the duodenal bulb, and endoscopists describe lesions relative to the pyloric ring and canal length to guide biopsy mapping and follow-up. Surgeons also rely on these landmarks during antrectomy or pyloroplasty, where misjudging the transition from antrum to duodenum risks narrowing the outlet or injuring adjacent gastroduodenal vessels. A small region, but unforgiving.
