Description
Positioned at the proximal humerus, the transverse humeral ligament spans laterally between the greater tubercle and the lesser tubercle, crossing the intertubercular sulcus (bicipital groove) on the anterior aspect of the shoulder. Deep to this bridge sits the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii as it enters the groove, while the humeral head lies medial and superior as it faces the glenoid cavity of the scapula. Superiorly, the acromion overhangs the glenohumeral joint, and the clavicle may be suggested anterior to the acromion depending on crop. Tight, local anatomy. Functionally, this small band matters because it frames a common pain generator: instability or inflammation of the long head of biceps tendon in the bicipital groove, often discussed in the context of biceps tendinopathy and associated rotator cuff disease.
