Description

Colored rendering of the facies medialis of the left lung is presented in medial view, with the apex positioned superiorly and the diaphragmatic surface inferiorly. A broad cardiac impression occupies the anteroinferior portion of the mediastinal surface, while the concavity for the aortic arch curves superior to the hilum and continues posteriorly as a groove for the descending thoracic aorta along the posteromedial margin. At the hilum, the left main bronchus lies posterior to the left pulmonary artery, and the superior and inferior pulmonary veins are arranged anterior and inferior, with the pulmonary ligament extending caudally from the root. This perspective matters when you need to correlate surface anatomy with what is encountered during thoracic imaging and operative exposure. The left lung’s deeper cardiac impression and the adjacent aortic grooves help explain why left lower lobe pathology can abut the descending aorta on CT, and why mediastinal pleura dissection near the hilum must respect the pulmonary artery’s superior position relative to the bronchus. Orientation is everything. Use this plate in gross anatomy and respiratory blocks to teach mediastinal relations, or in radiology teaching files to map CT and MRI findings to real pleural and hilar landmarks.
