Seen from a dorsal, top-down perspective, a Dermatophagoides dust mite is rendered as an oval, slightly dorsoventrally flattened arachnid with an anterior gnathosoma and a larger posterior idiosoma capped by a smooth, protective cuticle. Four pairs of jointed legs project laterally from the anterior half of the body, each limb showing distinct segmental divisions and terminating in small pretarsal structures consistent with claws and ambulacral pads used for grip on fibers. Fine setae rise from the dorsum and along the leg segments, forming the sensory “hair” field that helps the mite navigate its microenvironment. Scale is implied rather than measured.
