Microscopic morphology of an acarid dust mite is rendered as an oval idiosoma with a textured dorsal integument and a clearly layered cuticle, while the anterior gnathosoma projects forward from the body margin. Four pairs of robust, segmented legs arise ventrolaterally, each terminating distally in a claw-like pretarsus suited for grasping substrate. Fine setae (sensory hairs) stud the body surface and limb segments, giving clear landmarks for chaetotaxy and mechanosensory function. Mouthparts are emphasized at the anterior pole, with palps and cheliceral elements grouped around the oral opening. For allergy and indoor air quality work, dust mites matter less as a “bite” hazard and more as a reservoir of fecal pellets and body fragments that carry potent allergens such as Der p 1 and Der f 1, which drive perennial allergic rhinitis and asthma.
