Description
Sagittal visualization of the tunica mucosa vaginae captures the stratified squamous, nonkeratinized epithelial lining thrown into transverse folds (vaginal rugae), with intervening sulci running circumferentially around the lumen. Superiorly, the mucosa approaches the cervix and vaginal fornices, while inferiorly it continues toward the introitus in continuity with the vestibular mucosa. Rugae appear most prominent along the mid to lower vaginal canal and flatten toward the upper vagina. Texture matters. Clinically, the rugal mucosa is the surface assessed during speculum examination, colposcopy, and preoperative planning for vaginal surgery, where the examiner distinguishes normal pale-pink, moist squamous epithelium from atrophic thinning, inflammation, or focal lesions. A sagittal plane emphasizes how the mucosa accommodates distension, but also where it can split under traction during delivery-related lacerations or instrumentation. The view also supports teaching the transition to ectocervical squamous epithelium and the proximity of the cervix, a key landmark when discussing sampling for cervical cytology and evaluation of postcoital bleeding.
