A human embryo at approximately four weeks of gestation lies curved within the translucent amniotic membrane, seen in profile against the vascularised uterine wall. The C-shaped body axis brings the enlarged cephalic region close to the tail bud, with the pericardial bulge marking the ventral curvature. A developing optic vesicle appears as a shallow depression on the side of the head, while the pharyngeal region shows early arch contours. Rows of somites are visible as segmental ridges along the dorsal surface of the trunk, tapering toward the caudal end, and a small limb bud swelling emerges from the lateral body wall.
