Description
A seven-week human embryo lies curled in the C-shaped posture typical of the late embryonic period, suspended within the translucent amniotic sac against the vascularised uterine wall. The large cephalic prominence dominates the crown-rump length, with the pigmented optic cup visible as a dark ring on the lateral face, the depression of the developing external auricle behind it, and the mandibular and maxillary swellings of the pharyngeal arches converging toward the future mouth. The upper limb bud is paddle-shaped with the first indication of a hand plate, while the lower limb bud remains a shorter rounded projection near the caudal end, which still carries a slender tail-like extension. The umbilical and vitelline stalk runs anteriorly from the ventral body wall to the pear-shaped yolk sac, whose surface vessels remain visible. Week seven falls within the period of maximum organogenesis, when the neural tube, heart, eye, ear and limbs are all differentiating and are therefore most vulnerable to teratogens, maternal infection and drug exposure. Clinically, this is the stage at which transvaginal ultrasound reliably demonstrates a viable embryo with cardiac activity, a measurable crown-rump length for dating, and a yolk sac whose size and appearance carry prognostic weight in early pregnancy assessment. Failure of the processes visible here underlies anomalies such as limb reduction defects, anophthalmia and facial clefting.
