Description
At approximately nine weeks of gestation the fetus is shown in profile, curled in the characteristic C-shaped posture with the large domed head flexed toward the prominent abdomen. The developing eye appears as a darkly pigmented disc beneath thin translucent lids, and the external ear is forming as a low-set elevation on the lateral head. The upper limb is flexed across the chest with separating digital rays visible on the hand plate, while the lower limb is rotated with early toes distinguishable on the foot. The curved trunk follows the flexure of the developing vertebral column, and the umbilical cord inserts at the anterior abdominal wall, its spiralling arteries and vein leading toward the placental surface. A pear-shaped yolk sac remnant hangs on its stalk beside the cord, and the smooth amniotic membrane encloses the fetus within the deeper red uterine wall. Week nine marks the transition from the embryonic to the fetal period, when organogenesis is largely complete and growth and differentiation dominate. This is the interval when first-trimester ultrasound reliably demonstrates crown-rump length for dating, fetal heart motion, and limb movements, and when the physiological midgut herniation into the cord is still expected rather than pathological. Depicting the yolk sac and cord vessels supports discussion of early placental circulation, and the stage remains a sensitive one for teratogen exposure affecting palate, external genitalia and limb refinement.
