Description
The embryo is shown in its characteristic C-shaped curvature within the translucent amniotic membrane, with the uterine wall forming the surrounding chamber. The large cranial prominence dominates the profile, and on the lateral surface the darkened optic vesicle and the shallow otic pit are visible, with the pharyngeal arches forming the contour between head and thorax. Paddle-shaped upper and lower limb buds project from the trunk, the hepatic and cardiac bulge fills the ventral body wall, and segmental somites ridge the dorsal surface toward the still-present tail, or caudal eminence. The umbilical cord emerges ventrally and courses toward the placental attachment on the uterine wall. Week seven falls within the embryonic period, when organogenesis and limb morphogenesis are most active and therefore most vulnerable to teratogenic exposure, infection and metabolic disturbance. The features rendered here map to landmarks used in early obstetric ultrasound, where crown-rump length, cardiac activity and gestational sac relationships establish dating and viability. Recognising normal features such as the physiological tail and unfused limb plates prevents misinterpretation as anomaly, while this stage is also the reference point for understanding cleft formation, limb reduction defects and neural tube closure timing.
