Description
The embryo is shown at approximately five weeks of gestation, lying curled within the fluid-filled amniotic cavity against the vascular inner surface of the uterine wall. The body is strongly C-shaped, with a prominent cephalic pole at the upper pole of the curve, surface elevations corresponding to the pharyngeal arches along the future neck and face, and a darker optic placode marking the developing eye. Small paddle-like upper and lower limb buds project from the lateral body wall, and the caudal eminence, or embryonic tail, tapers at the lower pole. The broad connecting stalk carrying the umbilical vessels runs from the ventral abdominal region toward the placental site, and the translucent amniotic membrane and adjacent yolk sac soften the surrounding field. Week five sits at the heart of organogenesis, when the neural tube closes, the pharyngeal apparatus forms, and the limb buds first appear, making this the interval of greatest susceptibility to teratogens and to neural tube defects. Clinically it corresponds to the point when a transvaginal ultrasound can identify an intrauterine gestational sac with yolk sac and, shortly after, an embryonic pole with cardiac activity, the basis for distinguishing a viable early pregnancy from an ectopic or failed one. The visible connecting stalk and yolk sac also illustrate the transition from yolk sac to placental nutrition that underlies early pregnancy physiology.
