Description
A fetus of approximately 25 weeks gestation is shown in a tightly flexed intrauterine posture, seen from the left side with the head at lower left and the trunk curving upward to the right. Surface detail includes fine scalp hair, a well-formed auricle with a defined helix and lobule, fused but closed eyelids, a broad nasal bridge with patent nares, and full lips. One hand rests near the face with individual fingers and nail beds discernible, while the lower limbs are drawn up in physiological flexion so that the sole and five toes of one foot lie against the opposite thigh. The umbilical cord crosses obliquely in front of the face and chest, its helical twist revealing the paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein beneath the covering of Wharton's jelly. The translucent reddish uterine wall and amniotic space frame the figure.
