Description
A lateral view of the torso of a pregnant woman with the abdominal wall rendered translucent to reveal the gravid uterus at approximately 31 weeks of gestation. The fetus lies in a cephalic (head-down) position with the vertex directed toward the pelvic inlet, the limbs flexed against the trunk and the coiled umbilical cord passing anteriorly from the umbilicus to the placenta implanted along the uterine wall. The amniotic sac outlines the fetal contour, while the uterine fundus reaches well above the level of the umbilicus and displaces the maternal viscera superiorly.
