Seen from the side, the maternal torso is rendered semi-transparent so the gravid uterus occupies the lower abdomen and pelvis, its fundus reaching toward the level of the umbilicus. Inside the amniotic sac a fetus of about 21 weeks lies in a flexed attitude with the head directed inferiorly toward the cervix, limbs drawn toward the trunk, and the umbilical cord looping from the abdominal insertion to the placental disc on the uterine wall. Adjacent pelvic structures are visible in the same projection: the cervix and vagina below the uterine body, the urinary bladder anteriorly behind the pubic symphysis, the rectum and sacrum posteriorly, and loops of maternal bowel displaced superiorly by the enlarging uterus.
