Description
The torso of a pregnant woman is shown in profile with the skin and soft tissue rendered semi-transparently so that the pelvic viscera and skeleton remain visible. Within the pelvis the uterus is enlarged and anteverted, its fundus rising toward the pelvic brim, and it contains a fetus of approximately 14 weeks curled within the amniotic sac with the umbilical cord looping toward the placental surface. Anterior to the uterus lies the urinary bladder, with the vagina inferior and the rectum and sigmoid colon posterior, curving in front of the sacrum. Loops of small intestine are displaced superiorly above the gravid uterus, while the lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and pelvic bones frame the compartment from behind. A lateral projection is the clearest way to demonstrate the spatial sequence of bladder, uterus and rectum within the true pelvis, and how that arrangement changes as the uterus grows out of the pelvis during the early second trimester. This relationship explains common first- and second-trimester complaints such as urinary frequency from bladder compression, constipation from rectosigmoid displacement, and the lumbar lordosis and low back strain suggested by the model's posture. It is also the orientation clinicians use when explaining fundal height assessment, uterine anteversion, and the safe route for transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound at this stage.
