Description

A fetus at approximately 32 weeks of gestation lies curled within the reddish uterine cavity, seen from the left side with the head presenting inferiorly. The rounded cranium carries a covering of fine scalp hair, the eyelids remain fused-closed, and the nose, lips and well-formed external ear (auricle) are fully modelled. The limbs are held in the characteristic flexed fetal attitude: the hip and knee are sharply flexed so that the foot with its five distinct toes and visible nail beds rests near the face, while the hand and fingers curl close to the mouth. The shoulder and thorax fill the middle field, and a segment of umbilical cord passes between the flexed thigh and the trunk against the vascular uterine wall. By the thirty-second week the fetus has accumulated substantial subcutaneous fat, giving the smoother, filled-out body contour and rounded cheeks shown here, in contrast with the leaner appearance of the early second trimester. This period is clinically important for late preterm and moderately preterm birth planning, since surfactant production, thermoregulation and coordinated suck-swallow are still maturing. The flexed posture and vertex orientation illustrated correspond to the presentation assessed on Leopold manoeuvres and third-trimester ultrasound, while hand-to-mouth contact demonstrates the reflex behaviour and fetal movement patterns monitored in biophysical profile scoring. The rendering suits obstetric and midwifery teaching sequences on fetal growth, antenatal classes and patient-facing pregnancy timelines that show how a baby looks and behaves near term. It also serves neonatology and prematurity education, textbook and journal figures on third-trimester development, and editorial or app content for expectant parents, complementing the earlier week 20, 21 and 22 images in the same series. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
