Description
A full-term fetus at 39 weeks of gestation is shown in close-up lateral profile, the head resting in flexion against the reddish, softly lit uterine wall. Visible surface anatomy includes fine scalp hair over a rounded cranial vault, the closed eyelid with formed lashes, the nose, philtrum and full lips, the modelled auricle of the ear with its helix and lobule, and a defined chin. The upper limb is folded across the chest so that the hand and separated fingers lie beside the mouth, while the shoulder, upper arm and a raised knee complete the characteristic flexed fetal attitude of late gestation, with subcutaneous fat smoothing the contours of the cheeks and shoulders.
