Description
At approximately 33 weeks of gestation the fetus fills much of the uterine cavity and is shown here in a cephalic presentation, the head directed inferiorly and the vertebral column curved in the characteristic fetal attitude. The limbs are tightly flexed, one foot and its individual toes drawn up near the face while the hands rest against the chest and abdomen, and the umbilical cord passes between them toward its placental insertion. Scalp hair is well developed, the auricle is fully modelled with a defined helix and antihelix, and subcutaneous fat has smoothed the contours of the thorax, abdomen and thighs. Behind the fetus the discoid placenta lies against the uterine wall, its chorionic plate crossed by branching fetal vessels. This stage marks the late preterm to early third-trimester window in which lung maturation, weight gain and central nervous system myelination advance rapidly, and it is the period most often discussed in counselling about preterm birth and neonatal outcomes.
