Description

The rendering shows a fetus at approximately 35 weeks of gestation lying curled within the amniotic cavity, the spine flexed and the limbs drawn toward the trunk in the classic fetal attitude. The head is well developed with visible scalp hair, a formed external ear (auricle), and rounded facial contours, while one hand rests against the chest with distinct fingers and the foot with separated toes lies close to the abdomen. Superiorly, the discoid placenta is attached to the uterine wall, its fetal surface displaying radiating chorionic vessels, and the umbilical cord spirals away from the placental insertion toward the fetal umbilicus, its two coiled umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein rendered in contrasting colour. The surrounding uterine wall and its fine vascular network frame the fetus, indicating the limited space available at this late stage of gestation. At 35 weeks the fetus is in the late preterm period, when lung maturation, subcutaneous fat deposition and weight gain accelerate ahead of term. Views of this stage support discussion of fetal presentation and lie, engagement of the presenting part, and the timing of external cephalic version when malpresentation persists. The cord anatomy shown here is directly relevant to nuchal cord, true knots, cord coiling indices and single umbilical artery, all assessed on obstetric ultrasound, while placental position and insertion site underpin counselling on placenta praevia, abruption and intrauterine growth restriction. The image suits obstetric and midwifery teaching, antenatal class handouts and pregnancy-week educational series where a consistent visual sequence from mid to late gestation is required. Obstetricians, sonographers, neonatal nurses and patient-education publishers can use it to explain late preterm development, fetal positioning and placental function to expectant parents, and it works equally well as a figure in textbooks, apps and journal articles on fetal growth. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
