Description

A fetus at approximately 37 weeks of gestation lies curled within the amniotic cavity, seen from the side with the head inclined toward the lower pole of the uterus and the spine forming a smooth convex curve. The limbs are drawn in close to the trunk, with the knees flexed, the hands tucked beneath the chin and the small toes clearly separated, reflecting the limited space of the term uterus. The scalp carries dark hair, the auricle of the external ear is fully modelled, and the subcutaneous fat gives the body the rounded contours typical of the final weeks. Behind the fetus, the discoid placenta is embedded in the uterine wall, its fetal surface showing the branching chorionic vessels that converge into the umbilical cord, whose two arteries and single vein spiral around one another. At 37 weeks the pregnancy is considered early term, and this is the anatomy that governs obstetric decision making in the last weeks: fetal lie and presentation, cord length and coiling, and the site of placental implantation. The cephalic attitude depicted here corresponds to the most favourable presentation for vaginal delivery, and the visible cord loops illustrate the substrate for nuchal cord or cord entanglement. Placental position relative to the internal os, assessed at this stage by ultrasound, determines the risk of praevia and antepartum haemorrhage, while placental surface area and vessel pattern underlie discussion of fetal growth restriction and uteroplacental insufficiency. The rendering suits antenatal education leaflets, midwifery and obstetric nursing curricula, and textbook figures on the third trimester and the physiology of the maternal-fetal interface. It also supports ultrasound teaching material comparing sonographic planes with the true fetal position, birth preparation classes, and clinic displays that track development week by week alongside earlier stages in the same series. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
