Description
A fetus at 38 weeks of gestation lies in the classic flexed attitude within the intact amniotic sac, seen in left lateral profile with the head directed inferiorly toward the cervical pole. The vertex, covered with fine scalp hair, is well developed, the auricle of the external ear is fully modelled, and the arms are drawn across the chest so the hand and separated fingers rest near the face. The knees are sharply flexed with the feet and individual toes brought close to the trunk, and the smooth contour of the spine follows the curve of the sac. The translucent amniotic membrane, suspended amniotic fluid, coiled umbilical cord and the deep red placental disc applied to the vascularised uterine wall complete the intrauterine setting. By week 38 the pregnancy is at term: subcutaneous fat has smoothed the body contours, lanugo and vernix are largely reduced, and the fetal lungs have produced sufficient surfactant for independent respiration.
