Description
At approximately 38 weeks of gestation the fetus fills the uterine cavity, shown here in a cephalic (head-down) lie with the trunk flexed and the vertex directed toward the lower uterine segment. Body contours are rounded by generous subcutaneous fat, the skin is smooth and pink-brown rather than translucent, and fine scalp hair covers the well-formed cranium. The ear is fully modelled with defined helix and lobule, the eyelids remain closed, and both upper limbs are drawn tightly across the chest with the fingers apposed near the face; one lower limb is flexed so the plantar surface and toes are turned toward the abdomen. The umbilical cord loops anterior to the limbs, its spiralled umbilical arteries and single vein discernible through the covering, and inserts into the placental disc applied to the upper uterine wall, whose myometrial layers and vascular pattern frame the amniotic cavity. Thirty-eight weeks marks early term, the point at which the fetus is normally engaged in cephalic presentation and lung maturity, thermoregulation and suck-swallow coordination are sufficient for extrauterine life.
