Description
The fetus is shown in a flexed intrauterine attitude at approximately 30 weeks of gestation, with the head turned toward the viewer, the chin tucked toward the chest and the limbs drawn in against the trunk. Fine scalp hair covers the vertex, the external ear is fully modelled, and the fingers and toes are separated with visible nail beds, features consistent with the third trimester. The umbilical cord leaves the anterior abdominal wall and spirals across the fetal thighs toward the placenta, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein indicated by the helical coiling of the vessels beneath the amniotic covering. The placenta is displayed as a discoid organ applied to the uterine wall, its fetal surface carrying branching chorionic vessels, while the surrounding amniotic cavity and myometrium frame the fetus. At 30 weeks the fetus is viable but preterm, and this stage is central to counselling on late prematurity, fetal growth surveillance and the timing of corticosteroid or magnesium therapy in threatened preterm birth. The relationship of cord to placenta and fetal body illustrated here underlies obstetric ultrasound assessment of cord insertion, nuchal or body cord loops, and placental site, and supports discussion of Doppler studies of the umbilical artery in suspected fetal growth restriction.
