Description

A fetus at 39 weeks of gestation lies in a flexed, head-down attitude inside the translucent amniotic sac, suspended in amniotic fluid within the uterine cavity. The subcutaneous fat is well developed, giving the rounded limbs, creased thighs and full cheeks characteristic of term, while lanugo has largely disappeared and fine scalp hair is present. One hand rests against the side of the face and the auricle of the ear is fully formed with firm cartilage; the knees and feet are drawn up close to the abdomen, and the toes are clearly separated.
