Description

Seen in lateral section through an adult male skull, the orbital contents are opened to trace the anterior ciliary arteries as they course with the rectus muscle tendons toward the anterior globe. Small arterial twigs approach the limbus from superior and inferior directions, running anterior to the equator and within the episcleral tissues where they contribute to the anterior segment circulation. The extraocular muscles lie concentrically around the eyeball, with branches traveling along the muscle bellies and inserting near the sclera, while adjacent yellow neural elements sit posteriorly in the orbital apex region. Medial to the orbit, the section exposes the nasal cavity and its conchae, providing bony orientation via the maxilla and surrounding facial skeleton. For teaching ocular perfusion, this is the clearest perspective on how muscular arteries become the anterior ciliary arteries and why anterior segment ischemia can follow extensive strabismus surgery. Ligation or cautery near rectus insertions, particularly when multiple rectus muscles are operated on in one session, risks compromising episcleral and conjunctival flow and can precipitate corneal edema, uveitis, and pupillary abnormalities. The illustration also supports discussions of surgical planes at the limbus and the relationship of anterior ciliary vessels to episcleral venous outflow pathways. Use this artwork in ophthalmology and ENT anatomy modules when you need orbital vascular detail anchored to recognizable skull landmarks, or in surgical texts covering strabismus approaches, perilimbal dissection, and anterior segment ischemia risk reduction. It also fits radiology and gross anatomy curricula as a labeled reference alongside orbital CT or cadaveric section labs. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
