Description
Viewed in lateral orientation, the spleen (lien) is presented with emphasis on its inferior pole (splenic base) and the organ’s overall ovoid, rounded contour. The diaphragmatic surface occupies the lateral aspect, while the visceral surface turns medially toward the stomach, left kidney, and tail of the pancreas, even if the hilum is only subtly implied from this side-on perspective. Superiorly the splenic dome rises toward the left hemidiaphragm and costal pleura, and inferiorly the base approaches the left colic flexure in typical adult topography. Lateral presentation matters because it mirrors how the spleen relates to the ribs and diaphragm in both trauma assessment and operative exposure. A blunt impact to the left lower thorax can split the parenchyma along subcapsular planes, and the inferior pole is a frequent site for lacerations that track toward the peritoneal reflections near the splenocolic ligament.
