Description
Seen in lateral section, the adult male orbit contains the globe (bulbus oculi) with anterior cornea and sclera, positioned anterior to the orbital apex and optic canal. The optic nerve (CN II) exits the posterior pole of the eyeball and runs posterosuperiorly toward the cranial cavity, while motor nerves course within the intraconal space toward the extraocular muscles. Along the orbital walls, sensory branches of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve (V1) track anteriorly and superiorly, aligning with the roof and medial wall before distributing toward the forehead and nasal bridge. A side-on cranial section clarifies how cranial nerves traverse the superior orbital fissure and optic canal, and why small shifts in orbital volume can produce striking neuro-ophthalmic signs.
