Description
Centered within the bony orbit, the bulbus oculi sits anteriorly with the transparent cornea forming the anterior pole and the sclera continuing posteriorly to the optic disc, where the nervus opticus exits at the posterior pole. The iris and central pupil face anteriorly, framed by the corneoscleral junction at the limbus, while the globe lies medial to the lateral orbital wall and inferior to the orbital roof in this skull section. Posteriorly, the optic nerve runs from the orbit toward the cranial cavity, accompanied by colored arterial and venous elements consistent with the ophthalmic artery and the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins. Depth cues from the cut bone place the eye within the conical orbital space rather than as an isolated globe. A skull section view like this clarifies the clinical geography of the orbital apex. Compressive optic neuropathy from thyroid eye disease, orbital apex syndrome, and traumatic optic canal injury all hinge on the short, crowded segment where the optic nerve and ophthalmic vessels pass from orbit to cranial cavity, close to the annulus of Zinn and the superior orbital fissure.
