Description
Left lateral profile of the aortic root places the aortic valve (valva aortae) at the junction of the left ventricular outflow tract and the ascending aorta. Three semilunar cusps sit inferior to the sinutubular junction, and the aortic sinuses (sinus of Valsalva) bulge superior and slightly lateral to each cusp, creating the characteristic contour of the root. From this side-on perspective, the leaflet free margins and commissures align obliquely, while the annulus lies inferior and posterior relative to the supravalvular ridge. Orientation like this matters when you are teaching the difference between cusp-level pathology and root-level pathology. The bulging sinuses are where the coronary ostia arise from the right and left aortic sinuses, so a lateral profile helps explain why aortic root dilatation can separate commissures and drive aortic regurgitation even when the cusps remain thin and mobile.
