Description
Seen from a lateral arrangement at the left side of the heart, the atrioventricular septum sits as a small but sharply defined fibrous partition at the junction of the interatrial septum superiorly and the interventricular septum inferiorly. The membranous septum occupies the central fibrous body region and lies immediately adjacent to the annulus of the mitral valve on the left, while the tricuspid valve ring lies more anterior and rightward across the septal plane. Inferior continuity with the muscular interventricular septum becomes apparent as the fibrous portion tapers, and the left ventricular outflow tract is positioned anterosuperior to the septal complex. Small area. Big implications. This relationship matters because the atrioventricular septum defines the anatomic crossroads between the valve annuli and the conduction axis. The atrioventricular bundle penetrates the central fibrous body and runs along the inferior margin of the membranous septum before dividing, so defects in this region (perimembranous ventricular septal defect, atrioventricular septal defect spectrum) and surgical work near the tricuspid or mitral annulus carry a known risk of complete heart block. A lateral perspective also clarifies why left-sided septal lesions can appear deceptively close to the aortic root and why patch placement or suture lines must respect the membranous septum’s borders.
