Description
Left-sided lateral sectioning through the atrioventricular septum brings the membranous septum into profile at the junction of the interatrial septum and the superior interventricular septum. Superiorly, the left atrium lies posterior to the aortic root, while the left ventricle sits inferior and anterior, separated at the atrioventricular junction by the fibrous cardiac skeleton. The septal region abuts the aortic valve annulus and the intervalvular fibrosa, with the anterior mitral leaflet inserting just inferior to this fibrous continuity. Small structure, big consequences. This lateral plane is the teaching view for understanding why so-called membranous ventricular septal defects cluster near the aortic valve and how perimembranous defects can distort the aortic cusp, leading to aortic regurgitation. It also frames the surgical and interventional risk zone: the atrioventricular conduction axis traverses the membranous septum near the central fibrous body, so patch closure, valve surgery, or device placement in this neighborhood can precipitate complete heart block. For cardiology boards and operative planning, this relationship is the point.
