Description
Posterior aspects of the male liver are presented with emphasis on the diaphragmatic (superior) surface forming the hepatic dome and the adjacent bare area. A discrete concavity on the posterosuperior surface corresponds to the cardiac impression (impressio cardiaca), a fossa-like depression created where the heart abuts the liver through the diaphragm. The impression lies superior to the posterior margin of the right lobe and just lateral to the fissure for the ligamentum venosum, aligning with the central tendon region of the diaphragm and the pericardial contact area. For teaching, this posterior presentation clarifies a relationship that is often misunderstood when learners only see anterior abdominal views: the liver is not simply an inferior neighbor of the heart, it is molded by it. That spatial arrangement matters in cross sectional imaging, where a shallow hepatic depression can be mistaken for a focal lesion on CT or MRI if the reader does not recognize expected diaphragmatic impressions. It also provides context for referred symptoms and for traumatic patterns, since blunt thoracoabdominal force can transmit through the diaphragm and create contusions along the hepatic dome at points of cardiophrenic contact.
