Description
A side view of the female torso is rendered semi-transparently so the pelvic contents read as a single continuous unit. The uterus sits in the true pelvis, still contained within the bony ring and only slightly enlarged, with the fetus at about week 10 of gestation suspended in the amniotic sac and attached by a short umbilical cord to the developing placental site on the uterine wall. Below and behind the uterus the cervix opens into the vagina, the urinary bladder lies anteriorly, and the rectum and sigmoid colon curve posteriorly, with loops of small intestine rising superiorly above the uterine fundus. The ovaries and the pelvic bone provide the lateral landmarks that fix the organs in space. Week 10 marks the transition from embryonic to fetal life: organogenesis is essentially complete, the limbs and digits are defined, and growth in crown-rump length becomes the dominant change. The lateral projection is the most useful one for showing why early pregnancy symptoms are pelvic rather than abdominal at this stage, since the fundus has not yet cleared the pelvic brim and the enlarging uterus presses directly on the bladder anteriorly and the rectosigmoid posteriorly.
