Description

The torso of a standing woman is rendered semi-transparent in lateral projection so that the pelvic contents read against the body surface. Within the pelvis the uterus is enlarged to roughly the level of the pelvic brim and contains a fetus at 13 weeks of gestation, curled with the umbilical cord coiling toward the placental site. The cervix and vagina continue inferiorly, while the fallopian tube and ovary extend posterolaterally from the uterine fundus. The urinary bladder lies anterior to the uterus, the rectum and sigmoid colon posterior to it, and loops of small intestine are displaced superiorly. The lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and pelvic bone frame the whole arrangement from behind. At the start of the second trimester the uterus is beginning to rise out of the true pelvis, and this lateral orientation shows precisely why: anterior pressure on the bladder shortens functional capacity, while posterior contact with the rectosigmoid and the lumbosacral curve accounts for much of the low back discomfort reported in early pregnancy. The same viewpoint clarifies fundal height assessment, the anteverted uterine axis relevant to transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound windows, and the position of the cervix used in speculum examination. Nuchal translucency and first-trimester screening are timed to this window, making the week-13 fetal proportions a useful visual reference. The image suits obstetric and midwifery teaching sets, antenatal class handouts, pregnancy-tracking applications and week-by-week atlases where a consistent lateral body view is carried across gestation. Publishers, patient-education designers and clinicians explaining trimester changes to expectant parents will find the transparent-body treatment particularly effective.
