Description
A lateral projection of the female trunk is rendered semi-transparent so the pelvic viscera read against the lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and pelvic bones. Centred in the pelvis, the anteverted gravid uterus is opened to show an approximately 11-week fetus curled within the amniotic sac, its enlarged cranium, limb buds elongated into recognisable arms and legs, and the umbilical cord running to the developing placenta on the uterine wall. The urinary bladder lies anteroinferior to the uterus, the rectum and sigmoid colon pass posteriorly, and loops of small intestine are displaced superiorly. The cervix and vaginal canal continue inferiorly, while the ovary and uterine tube are visible lateral to the fundus. At the end of the embryonic period and the start of the fetal period, week 11 marks the transition to rapid growth, with organogenesis largely complete and ossification beginning. This view is the anatomy behind first-trimester obstetric assessment: crown-rump length measurement for dating, nuchal translucency screening, and the early relationships that explain urinary frequency as the enlarging uterus meets the bladder. The lateral orientation also demonstrates uterine version and the corridor between symphysis, bladder and rectum used for transvaginal and transabdominal sonography and for chorionic villus sampling. Suited to obstetric and midwifery teaching sequences on trimester-by-trimester development, antenatal patient education on what the fetus looks like at 11 weeks, and textbook or app figures where the pelvic organ relationships must be shown together with the fetus.
