Description
A side view of the maternal torso shows the abdominal wall rendered translucent so that the pelvic and lower abdominal contents remain visible. The gravid uterus occupies the lower abdomen and pelvis, its fundus rising above the pelvic brim, and it contains a fetus at approximately 17 weeks of gestation lying in a flexed attitude within the amniotic sac. The umbilical cord passes from the fetal abdomen toward the placenta on the uterine wall, while loops of small intestine are displaced superiorly and posteriorly by the enlarging uterus. Behind and below the uterus the rectum and sacrum are seen, with the urinary bladder anterior to the cervix, the vagina inferiorly and the pubic symphysis marking the anterior pelvic boundary. At this stage of the second trimester the fetus has recognisable limbs, digits and facial contours, and skeletal ossification is progressing, which is why week 17 falls close to the window used for detailed anomaly scanning and for amniocentesis when indicated. The lateral projection makes the mechanical consequences of uterine growth explicit: compression of the urinary bladder that contributes to increased urinary frequency, upward displacement of bowel, and the shift in maternal posture and lumbar lordosis that accompanies a forward-carried uterus. The spatial relationship between uterus, bladder, rectum and bony pelvis is also the basis for interpreting transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound planes in mid-pregnancy. The image suits obstetric and midwifery teaching sequences that track uterine size and fetal development week by week, as well as antenatal education leaflets, pregnancy apps and clinic wall charts aimed at expectant parents.
