Viewed from the right lateral aspect, the right main bronchus continues into the bronchus intermedius and then gives rise to the right lower lobar bronchus (bronchus lobaris inferior dexter) within the inferior lobe. From that lower lobar bronchus, the anterior basal segmental bronchus (bronchus segmentalis anterobasalis, B8) courses anteroinferiorly, situated anterior to the posterior basal segment and superior to the diaphragmatic surface. Segmental relationships are implied by the branching geometry, with B8 oriented more anteriorly than the lateral basal (B9) and posterior basal (B10) bronchi. Airway anatomy. Precise and unforgiving. For bronchoscopy, this is one of the segmental targets that can be hard to conceptualize without a lateral map, since the anterior basal bronchus turns forward within the right lower lobe and can be missed when navigating from the bronchus intermedius into the basal pyramid.
