Description
Segmented sacculations of the male colon, the haustra coli, appear as a series of pouch-like bulges along the colic wall, separated by shallow grooves that correspond to the underlying taeniae coli and semilunar folds. Running longitudinally, the taenia libera, taenia omentalis, and taenia mesocolica tether the otherwise circumferential muscularis, so the bowel wall balloons outward between them. An anterior perspective favors the ventral contour of the ascending and transverse colon, with haustra arranged in a repeating pattern that becomes less pronounced toward the rectum. The effect is unmistakable. For teaching, haustra are more than surface texture, they are the gross expression of colonic motor physiology and the reason the large bowel can be distinguished from small intestine on inspection. Their presence and distribution support rapid pattern recognition in abdominal imaging: on plain radiographs and CT scout views, haustral folds typically do not traverse the full lumen, helping separate colon from small-bowel valvulae conniventes. Loss of normal haustration is also a concrete, anatomy-based sign, classically described as a lead-pipe colon in chronic ulcerative colitis, and it influences how clinicians interpret bowel caliber and wall contour in suspected colitis or toxic megacolon.
