Description

Posteriorly oriented colonic haustra are presented along the adult male large intestine, with sacculations separated by shallow grooves that correspond to the semilunar folds on the luminal side. Segmental bulges are most apparent over the ascending and descending colon as they course superiorly from the right and left iliac fossae toward the hepatic and splenic flexures, while the transverse colon spans more horizontally across the upper abdomen. Three longitudinal taeniae coli contour the external surface and gather the wall into the bellowed pattern, with the rectum appearing comparatively smooth and lacking true haustration. From this dorsal vantage, the colon sits anterior to the posterior abdominal wall and retroperitoneal regions, with haustra draping across the flanks. A posterior view clarifies how haustra mark the colon, not the small bowel, a teaching point that becomes practical when interpreting abdominal radiographs and CT scout images where colonic gas outlines the haustral pattern. This perspective also supports clinical discussion of large-bowel obstruction and volvulus, since progressive colonic dilation exaggerates haustral spacing proximally and helps localize the level of obstruction relative to the flexures and sigmoid. Pattern recognition matters. It is often the fastest clue. Use this artwork for gross anatomy laboratories, gastrointestinal blocks, and exam figures that contrast colonic haustration with small-bowel valvulae conniventes, and for clinical teaching slides on plain-film bowel gas patterns, toxic megacolon, and postoperative ileus where haustra may appear effaced.
