Description
Prominent haustra form a segmented contour along the adult male colon, creating a series of sacculations separated by shallow grooves that track the underlying circular muscle and mucosal folds. The ascending colon rises on the right side of the abdomen to the hepatic flexure, then the transverse colon crosses anterior to the small bowel toward the splenic flexure before continuing inferiorly as the descending colon. From there, the sigmoid colon curves medially toward the pelvis, where the rectum becomes a smoother-walled terminal segment with far less external haustration. A segmented bowel wall, seen externally. Haustral patterning is more than surface texture, it is a landmark for orientation and a teaching handle for large-bowel motility. Loss of haustra in ulcerative colitis produces the classic lead-pipe appearance on contrast enema and CT, while marked distension with preserved or altered sacculations can help frame the differential in colonic ileus and toxic megacolon.
