Description
Haustra coli form a series of sacculations along the large intestine, giving the colonic wall its segmented, bellows-like contour in an adult male. The pouching lies between the semilunar folds and follows the course of the colon from the cecum and ascending colon on the right, across the transverse colon, then inferiorly along the descending and sigmoid colon. Taeniae coli run longitudinally and, by their relative shortening, create the haustral pattern that sits external to the circular muscle layer but is expressed on the luminal contour. Segmental anatomy. Because haustra reflect normal colonic tone and peristaltic segmentation, this view helps separate physiologic sacculations from pathologic dilatation on abdominal radiographs and fluoroscopy. Loss of haustration in the transverse and descending colon is a classic teaching point for chronic ulcerative colitis, while abrupt distension with preserved or exaggerated haustral markings can point you toward acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (Ogilvie syndrome) rather than toxic megacolon.
