Seen from a superior viewpoint, the liver’s diaphragmatic (superior) surface forms a broad, smooth convexity that conforms to the undersurface of the right hemidiaphragm and extends across the midline toward the left lobe. Along the posterosuperior aspect, the coronary ligament attachment outlines the bare area of the liver where hepatic parenchyma abuts the diaphragm without peritoneal covering. Laterally, these reflections converge toward the right triangular ligament, while medially the falciform ligament would course toward the anterior abdominal wall, separating right and left anatomical lobes on the superior contour. Clean surface anatomy. This orientation matters when you need to correlate hepatic topography with diaphragmatic mechanics and subphrenic spaces, because the superior surface defines where fluid, blood, or pus can track in a right subphrenic abscess and where postoperative collections may sit after upper abdominal surgery. The coronary ligament and bare area are also practical landmarks during mobilization of the right lobe in open or laparoscopic hepatectomy, and they frame the route by which inflammation can spread between liver and diaphragm. For teaching, it clarifies why pleuritic pain can refer to the shoulder via the phrenic nerve when the diaphragmatic peritoneum overlying the liver is irritated.
