Description
Anterior orientation centers on the left lung hilum and the bronchial tree as it enters the lower lobe, with the superior segmental bronchus (B6) traced from the inferior lobar bronchus into the apical (superior) segment of the left lower lobe. Superiorly and slightly anterior sits the left upper lobe bronchus, while the left main bronchus lies medial to the lobar parenchyma as it courses inferolaterally from the carina. The bronchus is shown heading posteriorly within the lower lobe even though it is viewed from the front. Segmental branching pattern matters here. Clinically, B6 is a key landmark for bronchoscopy and thoracic surgery because it defines the airway to the superior segment of the lower lobe, the segment that often bears dependent secretions and aspiration related changes when patients are supine. That posterior course also explains why an anterior schematic helps learners reconcile surface anatomy with endoscopic navigation, and why selective bronchial intubation or mucus plugging can preferentially ventilate or obstruct this segment. For segmentectomy planning, identifying B6 in relation to the inferior lobar bronchus reduces wrong segment dissection and guides staple line placement when preserving basal segments.
