Description

Anterior thoracic orientation brings the right lung hilum into focus, with the right main bronchus giving rise to the superior (upper) lobar bronchus and its apical segmental bronchus (B1) directed superiorly toward the lung apex. Medial to the lung, the trachea bifurcates at the carina, and the right pulmonary artery and superior pulmonary vein relate closely to the bronchial branches at the root of the lung. The apical segment lies superior to the anterior and posterior segments of the right upper lobe, and the segmental bronchus tracks centrally within its segment, accompanied by segmental pulmonary arterial branches while pulmonary veins course in the intersegmental planes. Access to the apical segmental bronchus matters in bronchoscopy and thoracic surgery because B1 is a frequent target for selective sampling, bronchial blockade, and segment-directed resections. Endobronchial tuberculosis, postprimary infection, and aspiration-related disease often involve upper-lobe segments, and accurate identification of the right upper-lobe branching pattern helps prevent wrong-segment lavage or biopsy. An anterior view also mirrors the working perspective for many airway procedures, where the spatial relationship of the right superior lobar bronchus to adjacent vessels guides safe navigation at the hilum. A tight corridor. Use this illustration in pulmonary anatomy and respiratory block teaching to clarify right upper-lobe segmental bronchial anatomy (segmentalis apicalis) and its relation to lobar branching. It also fits thoracic surgery texts on right S1 segmentectomy, anesthesia references on one-lung ventilation planning, and radiology or bronchoscopy manuals that correlate segmental bronchi with CT-based localization of apical lesions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
