Description
Posterior scalp and nuchal anatomy are rendered with the occipital bone and external occipital protuberance anchoring the midline, while the mastoid regions sit inferolateral to the auricles on either side. Superficial and deep layers of the posterior cervical musculature are organized around the midline nuchal ligament, with trapezius spanning superolaterally toward the superior nuchal line and upper cervical spinous processes continuing inferiorly into the vertebral column. Yellow peripheral nerves course superiorly across the occipital region and laterally toward the auricle, while red arterial and blue venous pathways track between muscle planes and along the suboccipital and posterior cervical compartments. Clear laterality. This posterior view matters when teaching the layered dissection of the neck and the neurovascular corridors that become relevant in occipital pain syndromes. The greater occipital nerve (dorsal ramus of C2) commonly becomes irritated where it emerges inferior to the inferior oblique capitis and then pierces semispinalis capitis and trapezius near the superior nuchal line, a frequent target for occipital nerve blocks. Surgeons also rely on these landmarks when planning posterior approaches to the upper cervical spine, where staying oriented to the midline ligament and adjacent venous channels helps limit bleeding and iatrogenic nerve injury.
