Description
Left lateral anatomy of the male head and upper neck is rendered with the cranial vault and facial skeleton as a deep framework, including the temporal region, zygomatic arch, mandible, and the superior cervical vertebrae. Overlying the lateral skull, temporalis fans inferiorly to its insertion on the coronoid process while masseter spans from the zygomatic arch to the mandibular angle, sitting anterior to the parotid gland. Orbicularis oculi encircles the orbit and orbicularis oris surrounds the oral fissure, with the external ear positioned posterolateral to the temporomandibular joint and anterior to the mastoid region. Superficial vessels and nerves track across these planes, and the sternocleidomastoid descends inferomedially from the mastoid process to the sternum and clavicle, forming a prominent anterolateral border of the neck. This side-on composition matters because it places the parotid gland, facial nerve branches, and the retromandibular venous region into one teachable corridor where iatrogenic injury is common. A clinician can relate the yellow nerve arborization to the extracranial course of cranial nerve VII as it exits the stylomastoid foramen and divides within the parotid, a relationship that governs safe planes in parotidectomy and helps explain postoperative facial weakness. The carotid artery and jugular vein in the neck provide additional orientation for approaches to the carotid sheath and for understanding why sternocleidomastoid is a key surface landmark. Clean anatomy. High yield. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy blocks, dental and maxillofacial teaching on muscles of mastication and the temporomandibular joint, or ENT and plastic surgery materials covering facial nerve anatomy, parotid tumors, and regional anesthesia. It also supports patient-facing explanations of facial pain patterns and nerve injury after trauma to the zygomatic arch or mandible. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
