Description
Posterior musculature of an adult female is presented from the occiput through the neck, shoulder girdle, upper back, and upper limb, with the trapezius spanning from the superior nuchal line and nuchal ligament down to the thoracic spinous processes and laterally to the spine of scapula and acromion. Lateral to the cervical spine, the sternocleidomastoid contours the posterolateral neck while deeper posterior neck muscles blend into the upper fibers of trapezius at the midline. Over the scapula, the deltoid caps the shoulder laterally, and the infraspinatus and teres minor occupy the posterior scapular surface inferior to the scapular spine, converging toward the greater tubercle of the humerus. Inferiorly, latissimus dorsi sweeps superolaterally toward the axilla as the erector spinae columns run longitudinally on either side of the vertebral spines; in the arm, triceps brachii dominates the posterior compartment, with proximal forearm extensors beginning to appear distal to the elbow. Posterior shoulder and upper back anatomy matters when you need to teach or plan around scapulohumeral mechanics and posterior cuff pathology, because the infraspinatus and teres minor lie deep to the posterior deltoid and are common targets in rotator cuff tendinopathy and tears. Surface landmarks here also map to nerve risk: the spinal accessory nerve traverses the posterior triangle to the deep surface of trapezius, and weakness produces shoulder droop and impaired scapular upward rotation. A clean posterior view makes those relationships obvious. It matters. Course directors often place this plate in gross anatomy and kinesiology modules to contrast the superficial back (trapezius, latissimus dorsi) with deeper stabilizers that students struggle to visualize in prosection. Publishers can pair it with sports medicine content on overhead athletes, scapular dyskinesis, and posterior shoulder pain, or with rehabilitation handouts that cue correct activation of lower trapezius versus overrecruitment of upper trapezius.
