Description
Posteriorly, the arterial tree is traced in red from the thorax into the neck, upper limbs, pelvis, and lower limbs within a semi-transparent adult male body outline. The thoracic and abdominal aorta descends just anterior to the vertebral column, giving paired posterior intercostal and lumbar branches, then bifurcates inferiorly into the common iliac arteries that continue as internal and external iliac vessels. Superiorly, the subclavian arteries sweep laterally toward the axilla as axillary and brachial arteries, while inferiorly the femoral system continues through the popliteal fossa into anterior and posterior tibial distributions; the vertebral column and spinal canal form a central midline landmark. Posterior orientation matters because many clinically relevant vessels are approached or understood from the back: the descending thoracic aorta and its intercostal branches relate closely to the sympathetic trunk and posterior mediastinum, and the lumbar arteries course behind the psoas major where they can be encountered during retroperitoneal surgery.
