Description
Presented in posterior anatomical position, the female skeleton is shown standing with both femora (thighbones) highlighted against the remainder of the appendicular and axial skeleton. Each femur extends inferiorly from the acetabulum of the pelvis, where the femoral head articulates with the hip, then continues as the neck to the greater and lesser trochanters before running distally as the elongated diaphysis. Distally, the medial and lateral femoral condyles sit superior to the tibial plateau, with the fibula positioned lateral to the tibia; posterior pelvic landmarks and the scapulae frame the lower limb context. A posterior whole-skeleton view makes it easier to teach femoral orientation without the patella obscuring the distal femur, and it clarifies how the femur sits medial to the fibula but lateral to the midline of the body. Clinically, this is the bone fractured in high-energy shaft injuries and in osteoporotic hip fractures, with the proximal femur and neck being key sites for intracapsular fractures that threaten the retinacular vessels supplying the femoral head. Alignment matters. The femoral neck anteversion and the relationship of the greater trochanter to the pelvis are frequent discussion points in total hip arthroplasty planning and in gait and leg-length assessment. Use this asset in gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching to anchor the femur’s proximal and distal articulations, or in orthopedic and radiology materials that need a clean, color-coded reference for femoral location relative to the pelvis, knee, tibia, and fibula.
